This is not the first book I’ve read by Amanda Grange, and the world of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is very familiar to me as well. Mr. Darcy’s Diary and a large (3-day) helping of BBC’s serial Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth was exactly what the doctor ordered when I decided I needed a boyfriend because I was lonely. (The feeling has thankfully passed.)
This was a very easy and enlightening read. I enjoyed reading the letters very much. However, I have a major issue with the title. First of all, it says diary. What the book presents is a series of letters between many characters in Pride and Prejudice and not all the letters are written by Mr. Darcy or even to Mr. Darcy. In fact, a majority of the letters are between other characters. That was a bit of a disappointment, but I survived. The book was still well-written, and I believe it got it’s point across – giving Austen fans a deeper look into the actions of the Bennet sisters, the Darcys, the Bingleys, the Gardiners, and even the Sothertons and de Bourges. There’s also an enlightening group of letters that feature Mr. Wickham as the writer. They’re entertaining to say the least!
Not sure I’d pick this book up again, but it was fun the first time through!
